How do I know if my car is oxidized?

Simply wash your car with a good wash and towel dry it. Once it is dry give it the “feel test” simply glide your hand gently across the paint. If you hear a rough scratching sound or you can feel your hand gripping against a rough paint surface it may be contaminated. If you drive you car daily and have not clayed your car in more than 6 months, it is most likely contaminated.

How do I know if I have been neglecting my paint?

Many factors can contribute to neglected paint. Improper maintenance is the most common form. Dish soaps contain detergents, so it is not recommended to use for washing. The detergents can damage the paint. If your car’s finish is left unprotected, your paint is more vulnerable to attract contaminants. If your paint feels rough when you glide your hand across a recently washed vehicle, it is a good indication that the paint is in need of a clay bar application. If the paint no longer looks shiny, this is another indication of neglected paint.

Oxidation you can feel can be removed with a clay bar or a clay block. Paint oxidation can also be removed with a compound or a polish after the surface is clayed.

How much do you think you are worth? Prices can vary depending on the job.  It is always important to explain to your customer what the services available are.  A wash followed by a clay and polish has a countrywide average between $140-220 for a retail client and $75-$105 for a wholesale detail for a high volume used car dealer.  Be prepared to charge a lot more depending on the condition of the paint, the amount of time required and if the final steps require a sealant or a wax the prices will be much higher.

Can scratches be removed from my paint job without my vehicle having to be repainted?

Some light surface scratches can be removed by using a compound or a light polish. 2) Some deeper scratches that have only gone through 1 or 2 coats of clearcoat, can be wet sanded out with the correct water sanding sheets. If scratches have gone completely through clear coat, then the vehicle will have to be repainted.

What are water spots and there do they come from?

Water spots are caused by dissolved minerals in water. Calcium carbonate (sometimes called lime) is the most common and appears white and chalky when dry. These minerals form ions when dissolved in water, when the water evaporates, it leaves the minerals behind. That’s why water heaters, coffee pots, and humidifiers get coated with minerals over time. Harder your water, the more dissolved minerals.

How do I prevent water spots?

Remove the water before it evaporates. If you dry a surface with an absorbent material like a chamois or a microfiber towel, the minerals are absorbed with the water, so no water spots occur.
